Reverse osmosis membranes are organic membranes derived from polymers: cellulose derivatives and polyamides.
Other polymers with better resistance to oxidation, pH or temperature such as polyacrylonitrile, polysulfone, polycarbonates and polyvinylidene fluoride are increasingly used.
